Columbus police release bodycam after murder suspect shot by SWAT officer in Victorian Village

The Columbus Division of Police released body camera video after a Toledo man wanted in the murder of his teen daughter was shot by a SWAT officer in Victorian Village Tuesday morning.

Sgt. James Fuqua said a SWAT team was given information that a suspect, described as a wanted felon, was in the Victorian Village area.

The SWAT team saw the suspect, later identified by Columbus police as 33-year-old Darnell Jones, and made contact with him in the area of Dennison and West 2nd avenues around 10 a.m.

Bodycam video shows a SWAT officer approach Jones, who was walking down a sidewalk wearing dark clothes.

“Come here, man,” the officer told him.

The officer was then seen pulling out a gun and pointing it at Jones, who said, “Don’t do it.”

The officer asked the man to show his hands a few times.

Jones can be heard on bodycam repeatedly telling the officer, “Just kill me.”

According to police, Jones then fired a weapon that was concealed in his clothes. The SWAT officer quickly returned fire, hitting him.

Another officer who was nearby is then heard yelling “Shots fired. Shots fired,” over the radio.

A few more officers can be seen arriving, surrounding Jones, who was lying on the sidewalk. They told him not to move.

An officer approached Jones and said he could see a “33,” or gun, by Jones. He also is heard saying that there was a walkie talkie in his hand.

“Don’t you move or you’re going to get shot, OK?” one of the officers asked.

The video showed Jones with gunshot wounds to the arm and the side.

There was a total of eight seconds between the officer engaging with Jones and the shot being fired.

Jones is charged with felonious assault in connection to the shooting. No officers were injured in the incident.

Jones, who also uses the surname Ogletree, was wanted by the Toledo Police Department for murder and abduction. Police issued a warrant for his arrest on Monday after the body of 13-year-old Kei’Mani Latigue was discovered inside an abandoned home in Toledo.
