💥💥IMPD Officers Fire on Reaching Suspect Who Turned Out To Be Unarmed

at about 5:55 p.m., detectives with IMPD’s North District Violence Reduction Team and Violent Crimes Task Force were conducting a felony warrant investigation in the 900 block of north grant avenue. Detectives surrounded a detached garage where 36-year-old Cartonieo McBride was believed to be hiding. An IMPD child Abuse Detective requested that McBride be located for his open warrants. Detectives were briefed prior to arrival that McBride had warrants for unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon, unlawful possession of a firearm by a domestic batterer, theft, robbery, and driving while suspended. McBride exited the garage with his hands raised and initially complied with detectives’ commands.

McBride approached detectives but then stopped short. Detectives continued to give him commands. Detective Virt explained to McBride the reason he was being detained. When directed to turn around, McBride said, “I’m not doing none of that.” McBride turned and began reaching. Detective Hunter deployed her less lethal taser. Detective Jones then discharged his service weapon. McBride ran and then fell to the ground. Detectives gave commands for him to keep his hands visible. McBride rolled away from detectives and began reaching. Detectives Virt and Hunter discharged their service weapons. Additional officers arrived with a ballistic shield and safely approached McBride, who was placed into custody and provided medical aid. Medics arrived and transported McBride to Eskenazi Hospital in critical condition.
